Do I have an eating disorder?
I hate to break it to you, but if you Googled this question, the answer may very well be “yes.”
But you’re so not alone!
This is actually how my recovery story starts, too. In fact, it wasn’t until I was diagnosing and treating eating disorders in other people that I truly realized how serious my own disorder had been.
I had always down-played it…
“I definitely had some eating issues, but not a full-blown eating disorder.”
or
“Oh, it’s nothing diagnose-able.”
or
“I have struggled with my body image - who hasn’t, right?”
Sound familiar?
But with the clarity that comes with time, a master’s degree, and clinical experience, I was finally able to see my own eating disorder accurately. I was 10 years into my own recovery when it sunk in at last:
I had anorexia in my teens.
So it’s nothing to be ashamed of if you’ve downplayed your own “eating issues.” In fact - that can actually be a symptom of the eating disorder itself!
And even if your unique, complicated relationship with food and your body can’t be encapsulated by a particular diagnosis, that doesn’t mean you don’t need and deserve skilled, compassionate care from someone who actually gets it.
So, do you have an eating disorder? Maybe! The only way to know for sure is to schedule a session and get assessed by a pro.
But the real question most people are asking underneath is: am I sick enough to deserve help?
Friend, I cannot emphasize this enough:
YES.
If this is stressing you out, taking up too much energy and brain space, or interfering in your life in some way, then this is your sign.
